Shuttered Glass - Inner fight.
“Are you crazy? It’s a common phrase, I know. But it means something particular to me: the tunnels, the security screens, the plastic forks, the shimmering, ever-shifting borderline that like all boundaries beckons and asks to be crossed. I do not want to cross it again.”

Borderline Personality Disorder is a complicated and poorly understood condition which involves a complex personality structure. Often, an individual has been subjected to ongoing, developmental trauma and invalidation trauma. Folks with BPD struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder. I offer a highly relational approach to treating folks with BPD while also using DBT. I often hear from my patients that they felt that other clinicians were overwhelmed by their symptoms or afraid to work with them. I will never blame you for your suffering. I have a deep understanding of this disorder which requires a complex and nuanced skill set. I will not be overwhelmed by you or your needs.

BPD is a gendered diagnosis and often stigmatized. I address the historical relationship between woman and identity, as well as the often strained relationship to self. Examining the relationship between gender, psychological distress, and female socialization are key to understanding this complicated personality disorder. Key to treating this illness are not just DBT techniques but women’s studies, the psychology of women, sociology, and the history of medicine. Folks with BPD often require a relational approach combined with precision DBT skills training.
